Today's #TBTV is a look backward and a taste of what's to come, as we feature Farm Aid artists past and future. Wait, Farm Aid? Wasn't that one of the television concerts in the mid-80s, like Live Aid and Band Aid? Yes, it was. The original Farm Aid was held at Memorial Stadium in Champaign, Illinois. Willie Nelson, one of the founders of Farm Aid, was inspired by Bob Dylan's comments at Live Aid that he hoped some of the money raised would go to family farmers in America in danger of losing their farms, and their livelihoods, because of mortgage debt. That 1985 show raised $9 million for America's family farms, and the concerts held in the years since have raised millions more.
Farm Aid 2016 is going to be held at Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow, Virginia, on September 17. This year's lineup will include Nelson, fellow Farm Aid board members John Mellencamp, Neil Young, and Dave Matthews, along with the Alabama Shakes, Sturgill Simpson, Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, among many others. In addition to the music, there will be family farm-grown food and concessions and hands-on activities to teach festival-goers about agriculture. Individual and four-pack tickets are available.
In honor of Farm Aid, I've picked a trio of my favorite performance videos over the years. We have Waylon Jenning accompanying Johnny Cash on "Folsom Prison Blues" from 1985, Neil Young and Willie Nelson performing Young's Heart of Gold" in 1995, and the Dave Matthews Band performing "Two Step" in 1997.
