New Music Monday - 'Awake' by John Aulabaugh

Today's pick for #NewMusicMonday is Awake, a slow-burning rocker from local-ish singer-songwriter John Aulabaugh. This song is equal parts Tom Petty and 311, a dash of high lonesome with a dollop of a reggae beat underpinning it. Awake is the most recent single from John's solo debut, "Of Sins Present and Past". The album is one piece of a larger meta-media project that will include a companion book and concert tour. The project will benefit Transitions, a Cincinnati-area substance abuse treatment facility.

"Of Sins Present and Past" was produced by Rami Jaffee, the keyboardist for The Wallflowers and a member of the Foo Figers' touring band. Other contributors to the album include multi-instrumentalist Jessy Greene, who was a member of The Jayhawks who has also toured with the Foos, and original Pearl Jam drummer Dave Krusen. Each song tells a story about an individual from John's life who's struggled with drug or alcohol addiction.

Yup. Just yesterday I added Tom Petty to my list of the influences I heard infused in this album. I will caution that this CD is one of those "sticky" ones that are hard to take out once you put it in, and you're certain to wake up with one of these tunes playing in your head next week, if not sooner.
