Wammie Tickets

With the Wammie awards one week away, now seems like a good time to remind people of where they can get tickets. In year's past, the event has sold out when held at the State Theatre, but with Strathmore's new Music Center hosting this year's awards and able to hold many more people, it seems unlikely that the event will sell out this year. However, according to the WAMA website, this year's seats are reserved, which means the sooner you buy your tickets, the better your seats will be.

The general public can order tickets through the Strathmore website by clicking here. That page includes a seating layout for the venue and the breakdown in ticket prices.

WAMA members and Wammie nominees have access to discounted tickets through the WAMA website. Those tickets are available here.

For more information on the Wammies, see this previous post.

By the time the competition wraps up on February 26, the judges will have chosen one singer/songwriter and three bands from the Washington Metro area to perform at a venue on 6th Street in Austin, Texas during the South By Southwest Music Festival and Conference.

Volunteers Needed

Volnteers are needed for the 2005 Six Points Music Festival. For more information, see this post to the ArlingtonMusicScene.com Yahoo Group.

Six Points Selection Committee

Melissa DePaulis will be heading up the selection committee for this year's Six Points Music Festival. Melissa is a violinist, a moderator on the Arlington Music Scene Yahoo Group, an active participant in events such as the ArlingtonMusicScene.com happy hours as well as last year's Six Points Music Festival, and a volunteer with the Washington Area Music Association (WAMA). She is also not a member of any band, which will provide the committee with a leader who is an active member of the local music community and ArlingtonMusicScene.com, but not looking to perform at the festival.

Melissa has been working to put together a selection committee of music industry professionals from the Washington area. Confirmed members thus far include Z104 DJ Jenni Chase, DC101 DJ Roche and Washington Area Music Association (WAMA) President Mike Schreibman.

The selection committee will rate each submission, on a scale of 0-5, in the areas of Songwriting/Lyrical Content; Vocal, Instrumental and Overall Performance; Originality; and Visceral Reaction. The average of the committee's votes for each performer will then be calculated and they will be ranked accordingly. The committee will then select the highest ranking performers based on the number of slots available, taking into account the stage specs and musical genres that would be most appropriate for each festival venue.

Submissions for this year's Six Points Music Festival must be postmarked by Monday, February 7, at which point they will be reviewed by the selection committee. The line-ups and the venues will then be announced in late February. The festival submission form, along with more information, is available here.

Happy Hour Tonight, Wednesday, January 19

The next ArlingtonMusicScene.com happy hour is tonight, Wednesday, January 19, from 6pm to 8pm, at IOTA Club and Cafe in Arlington, Virginia. These are designed to give musicians, music industry professionals, music fans and anyone else who would like to attend, the opportunity to network outside of the typical show scene. There will be no music, other than what's on the CD player, giving people a chance to meet people, discuss ideas and network with one another. Basically, it's a chance to get together once a month, have a couple drinks and talk music or whatever you'd like. If you get there and don't recognize anyone, look for the people with the masking tape nametags.

IOTA's weekly open mic will follow the happy hour, for those who want to play or catch some live music that night. Sign up for that is at 8:30pm.

IOTA is located along Wilson Blvd., two and half blocks from the Clarendon stop on Metro's Orange Line. Directions and other information about the club is available at www.iotaclubandcafe.com.

You can also post questions about the happy hour to the Arlington Music Scene Yahoo Group. Click here or on the link in the right-hand column to enter. The group now has approximately 900 subscribed members.

Six Points Music Festival 2005

The second annual Six Points Music Festival, scheduled to take place from April 7 through April 11, will showcase performers at venues throughout Arlington. Last year’s festival featured over thirty bands at venues such as IOTA Club and CafĂ©, Galaxy Hut and Whitlow’s On Wilson.

Artists can submit materials to be considered for inclusion in the festival through the submission form available here. A CDR, including three original songs, is required along with the submission form. Full CDs or press kits will not be accepted. A $10 submission fee is also required. Checks should be made out to the Washington Area Music Association (WAMA), who will be co-sponsoring this year’s festival along with the festival’s founding organization, the website ArlingtonMusicScene.com. The money raised through this will be used to purchase advertising for the festival. All submissions must be postmarked by February 7, 2005. The line-ups and venues for this year’s festival will be announced in late February.

The festival gets its name from the Six Points of Arlington, representing the county's six major focal points: Ballston, Clarendon, Columbia Pike, Crystal City, Rosslyn and Shirlington. Last year's festival was concentrated primarily along Wilson Boulevard and near the Clarendon and Courthouse stops on Metro's Orange Line. Tentative plans call for this year’s festival to go beyond that region, with some shows possibly being held in nearby Washington, D.C.

ArlingtonMusicScene.com is a website built around a Yahoo Group, dedicated to increasing awareness of and participation in the vibrant music scene in and around Arlington, Virginia. Founded by musicians in February 2001, the website provides a forum for artists, fans, residents and business owners to interact and pool their resources to benefit the community and the diverse array of local talent within the region. ArlingtonMusicScene.com represents a broad range of genres and interests, with the common goal of supporting and enhancing the flourishing regional music scene by fostering a sense of community and by sponsoring events, promotions and other activities.

WAMA is a non-profit tax exempt organization of music industry professionals committed to raising the profile of the region's diverse music community. WAMA's main goal is to promote Washington area music in general and to achieve national recognition of the region as an important center for live and recorded music. Just as the nation's capital is comprised of a rich cross section of cultures, WAMA's membership embraces all musical styles from classical, bluegrass, go-go, R&B, and reggae, to rock, jazz and folk. In short, WAMA is an umbrella organization of musicians, concert promoters, lawyers, recording engineers, managers, graphic artists, and related businesses working together to address areas of common concern.
